Plans du Chateau
Dear readers, as always it is a pleasure to reach out to you and update you on the grand adventure known as Château Avensac. Spring has come to the south of France with flowers in bloom and the breath of leaves beginning to unfurl on the trees. Restaurants are dragging their lunch business out onto the streets, and the open market days are abuzz with shoppers at stalls overflowing with early spring fruit and vegetables. It will not be long before the entire south of France is dining, drinking, and partying outside in the sunny days that stretch long into the evenings.
That all sounded so poetic and lovely, but fear not there will be a lot of stinky, mushy French cheese, duck, and fois gras everywhere, which I cannot tolerate! (Can you tell that my palette is so refined that those items do not sit well with me!! Ha ha ha ha ha…)
Chers lecteurs, comme toujours, c'est un plaisir de vous contacter et de vous tenir au courant de la grande aventure connue sous le nom de Château Avensac. Le printemps est arrivé dans le sud de la France, les fleurs s'épanouissent et le souffle des feuilles commence à se déployer sur les arbres. Les restaurants sortent leurs déjeuners dans les rues et les jours de marché sont animés par les acheteurs qui se pressent devant les étals débordant de fruits et de légumes printaniers. Dans peu de temps, tout le sud de la France mangera, boira et fera la fête à l'extérieur pendant les journées ensoleillées qui s'étendent jusqu'au soir.
We spend our days desperately staying one step ahead of the continuing work in the house. Questions, adjustments, and five million things to consider, ponder, and think about. Every room in the central wing, and the east wing are under attack. Scaffolding and ladders are ‘le style de l'époque’ (style of the time), and it is wonderful to see them. The floors are sealed up in the public rooms, as we await the arrival of the antique radiators so that the floor work can be 100 percent ready for sanding and finishing.
Nous passons nos journées à essayer désespérément de garder une longueur d'avance sur les travaux en cours dans la maison. Des questions, des ajustements et cinq millions de choses à considérer, à méditer et à penser. Toutes les pièces de l'aile centrale et de l'aile est sont prises d'assaut. Les échafaudages et les échelles sont le style de l'époque, et c'est merveilleux de les voir. Les sols sont scellés dans les salles publiques et nous attendons les radiateurs anciens pour que les sols soient prêts à 100 % pour le ponçage et la finition.
A massive order of lumber is due to arrive any day. The lumber is countless new floor joists for the bedrooms upstairs that have had their old tile and sand floors removed to reduce weight. With the removal of 6 inches of sand, we are adding a second set of joists to bring the floor level back up to the finish floor height. Many rooms are getting wood flooring, and a handful will have their original tiles put back in place using a more contemporary building technique.
Une commande massive de bois doit arriver d'un jour à l'autre. Il s'agit d'un nombre incalculable de nouvelles solives de plancher pour les chambres à l'étage dont les sols en carrelage et en sable ont été enlevés pour en réduire le poids. Avec l'enlèvement de 6 pouces de sable, nous ajoutons une deuxième série de solives pour ramener le niveau du plancher à la hauteur du sol fini. De nombreuses pièces recevront un plancher en bois, et quelques unes verront leur carrelage d'origine remis en place en utilisant une technique de construction plus contemporaine.
We have received a lot of questions, and then requests, for floor plans, so that the layout of the Chateau and its land could be better understood. I have decided to post the floor plans for the Chateau here in this post so that you can have a look at them. The original layout was designed in the 1790’s and as such you will find the room, to room, to room effect. The house also has halls and corridors, as well as vestibules at the bedroom doors. Each bedroom has former dressing rooms and servants sleeping rooms (small closet like rooms inside of a bedroom so that your servant was always close at hand). These rooms, inside of each bedroom, are becoming bathrooms, and they work brilliantly. Have a look at the floor plans and send us your thoughts or queries… we have taken every step of this process with great care and thoughtfulness as to the use of spaces… but it is always interesting to hear other takes on the rooms of the Chateau. Nous avons reçu beaucoup de questions, puis de demandes, concernant les plans d'étage, afin de mieux comprendre l'agencement du château et de son terrain. J'ai décidé de publier les plans du château dans ce billet afin que vous puissiez y jeter un coup d'œil. Le plan d'origine a été conçu dans les années 1790 et c'est pourquoi vous trouverez l'effet de pièce, de pièce, de pièce. La maison comporte également des halls, des couloirs et des vestibules aux portes des chambres, ainsi que d'anciens dressings et chambres de domestiques (petites pièces ressemblant à des placards à l'intérieur d'une chambre afin que votre domestique soit toujours à portée de main). Ce sont les pièces situées à l'intérieur de chaque chambre qui deviennent des salles de bains, et elles fonctionnent brillamment.
